Understanding Spiritual Shadows

24/05/2024

Hello everyone,

Recently, a member of our audience asked about shadow work, so I want to share my understanding and approach.

First, let's discuss what a shadow is. Imagine your physical shadow on the ground; similarly, we have spiritual shadows within us. These shadows are the dark parts of our soul. While our soul, our true self, is filled with love, light, and compassion, certain traumatic experiences, especially in childhood, create these spiritual shadows.

These experiences might involve pain, grief, anger, or resentment. For example, one of my earliest shadows formed when my mom left me at the age of three to go on holiday. I unconsciously decided that I would make her pay for leaving me. This created a shadow self—a part of me that lived in anger and resentment rather than love.

Living from this shadow self creates a disconnect from our true selves, leading to a constant feeling of something missing. We often blame others for our suffering, not realizing the root cause is within us—our decision to live from a shadow self created by past trauma.

Shadow work involves acknowledging and integrating these shadows rather than rejecting them. One effective method I use is Ho’oponopono, a practice of reconciliation and forgiveness. By empathizing with our shadow and making peace with our past, we can shine a light on it, allowing us to see and understand it better.

Working with a skilled facilitator can help you recognize these shadows and support you in integrating them. Once you become aware of your shadow, you can start the empathy work, giving your shadow the space to surrender and create new, healthier patterns.

Ultimately, integrating your shadow means bringing it back to your true self. It’s about understanding that loving God also means loving yourself and doing things that make you happy. Living from your true self involves prioritizing your happiness, not merely pleasing others or seeking external validation.

Remember, shadow work is about self-awareness and self-love, leading you to live authentically and joyfully. I hope this explanation helps you understand shadow work better.

Best regards,

Mariam
